  • Empowering Young Drivers: Continental Tire’s Commitment to Road Safety

Fort Mill, S.C., November 11, 2024 — Continental Tire is proud to announce its continued sponsorship of the ‘Alive at 25’ program, an initiative by the National Safety Council Southeastern Chapter aimed at reducing vehicular crashes involving young drivers. Since 2014, Continental Tire has supported this vital program, recognizing the critical need to address the leading cause of teen deaths in South Carolina.

Vehicular crashes remain the number one killer of teens in South Carolina. Alarmingly, traffic deaths in the state have risen by 26% from 1994 to 2022, the largest increase of any state during this period. In response, the National Safety Council Southeastern Chapter, in collaboration with law enforcement, high schools, Continental Tire, and other sponsors, has committed to reversing this trend through the ‘Alive at 25’ program.

The ‘Alive at 25’ program is designed to educate young drivers, aged 15 to 24, on adopting safer driving practices, taking responsibility for their behavior in various driving situations, and being aware of peer pressure and other driving hazards. Offered in over 100 public high schools across the Carolinas, the program aims to empower students to make safer choices both behind the wheel and as passengers.

“At Continental Tire, we believe in the power of giving back and making a difference where it truly matters. We understand the critical importance of road safety, especially for young drivers." said Bill Caldwell, Senior Vice President of Continental Tire. "Supporting initiatives like the ‘Alive at 25’ program is our way of ensuring that these young drivers are equipped with the knowledge and skills to stay safe. We are proud to continue our partnership with the National Safety Council to make a positive impact on youth driver safety.”

Continental Tire and the National Safety Council Southeastern Chapter aim to serve up to 500 students in five public high schools in York County, including Catawba Ridge High School, Clover High School, Fort Mill High School, and York Comprehensive High School.

The ‘Alive at 25’ program is facilitated by off-duty law enforcement officers and first responders who bring their personal experiences with young driver collisions to the classroom. These instructors are selected for their ability to communicate effectively with teens and create open, meaningful discussions about risk-taking, and hazard recognition. This initiative not only teaches driving responsibility but also instills a sense of ownership that is applicable on the road and in life.
